Oman Launches First Community Solar Power Station in Al Wadi Al Kabir
Oman is set to launch its first-ever community solar power station on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, in a landmark move that expands access to renewable energy for households and businesses across the Sultanate. The project, overseen by the Authority for Public Services Regulation (APSR) in partnership with Nama Group, is part of the national “Imtidad” programme.
What is the Al Wadi Al Kabir Community Solar Station?
Located in the Al Wadi Al Kabir area of Muscat Governorate, this station is the first of its kind in Oman. Its key innovation: subscribers do NOT need to install solar panels on their own roofs. Instead, they subscribe to the community station, which is connected to the national grid, and receive bill credits for the energy generated.
The station is expected to serve as a practical model for similar projects across Oman’s governorates, paving the way for a community-based transformation in how solar energy is adopted.
The “Imtidad” National Programme
The APSR launched the “Imtidad” programme in partnership with licensed electricity companies, under the patronage of H.E. Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals.
- Expand participation in renewable energy without high upfront costs
- Reduce electricity bills through regular credits
- Stimulate local investment in clean energy
- Support energy subsidy sustainability
- Create green jobs for Omani talent
How Community Solar Works
- Construction: Station built and connected to national grid
- Subscription: Households/businesses subscribe for a share
- Credits: Energy credits deducted from monthly bills
- Savings: Lower costs — no investment or maintenance needed
Impact on Oman’s Energy Sector
This initiative supports Oman’s renewable energy targets under Vision 2040, aiming for 30% renewable electricity by 2030 and carbon neutrality. The APSR confirmed the initiative will establish a framework for community solar projects nationwide.
Benefits Without Rooftop Panels
Perfect for households without suitable rooftops, tenants, and small businesses seeking energy savings without capital investment.
Conclusion
The launch of Oman’s first community solar station marks a milestone. By enabling access without rooftop installations, the Imtidad programme democratizes clean energy.
