Wind energy Oman: Oman to host the World Wind Energy Conference 2027 (WWEC2027)

Wind Energy Oman: Sultanate to Host World Wind Energy Conference 2027

Last updated: 25 September 2026

Wind energy in Oman has just gained a global stage. On 22 September 2026, the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA) announced that the Sultanate of Oman will host the 23rd World Wind Energy Conference (WWEC2027). It will be the first edition ever held in the Gulf. The event will be co-organised by Nama Power and Water Procurement (Nama PWP) and WWEA, with support from the Ministry of Energy and Minerals.

What Was Announced: WWEC2027 Comes to Oman

The World Wind Energy Conference has run since 2002, when the first edition took place in Berlin. It moves across continents and brings together developers, manufacturers, investors, researchers and governments. The most recent edition, WWEC2025, was held in Shantou, China.

Choosing Oman for 2027 is a first for the region. WWEA says the aim is to support Oman and its neighbours in their shift towards wind power and a renewable-based economy. Officials from the Ministry of Energy and Minerals described the selection as a sign of international confidence in Oman’s clean energy progress under Oman Vision 2040.

Key Fact: WWEC2027 will be the first World Wind Energy Conference hosted in the Gulf region.

Why Wind Energy in Oman Is Gaining Momentum

Oman’s renewable energy share is rising fast. According to the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, grid-connected renewables grew from 4.26% in 2024 to 9.46% in 2025. Renewable sources generated more than 4 million MWh of electricity last year.

Wind is a growing part of that mix:

  • Dhofar Wind Power Plant is already operating in the south of the country.
  • OQ’s Riyah wind projects total 234 MW across 36 turbines, the largest wind farm under development in Oman, targeting commercial operation in 2026.
  • Duqm (Al Wusta) recently saw O-Green install a 9.6 MW wind turbine.
  • National plans point to more than 2 GW of wind, around 5.7 GW of solar and 1 GW of energy storage by 2030.

Nama PWP highlights Dhofar and Al Wusta as emerging hubs for utility-scale wind, thanks to their strong wind resources. You can read more about the country’s resource potential in our guide to wind and solar energy in Oman.

What WWEC2027 Means for Oman’s Renewable Energy Sector

More International Investment

Hosting the global wind community puts Oman in front of turbine makers, developers and financiers. That exposure supports future IPP rounds and helps bring down project costs through competition.

Stronger Path to Net Zero 2050

Oman targets net-zero emissions by 2050. Wind complements solar well, because it often blows in the evening and during the summer monsoon (Khareef) in Dhofar. A balanced wind-solar-storage mix means more stable, dispatchable clean power.

Opportunities for Omani Businesses

Large wind projects create demand for local engineering, construction, O&M and supply chains. For commercial and industrial users, a cleaner grid supports long-term tariff stability and energy security.

AL DHAW’s View

At AL DHAW Sustainability Energy, we see WWEC2027 as a milestone for the whole renewable sector in Oman, not only wind. Utility-scale wind and solar are growing together, while businesses and homes are adding their own rooftop PV. If you want to cut your electricity costs today, our solar consultancy team can assess your site and design the right system.

الأسئلة الشائعة

When and where is the World Wind Energy Conference 2027?

WWEC2027 will be hosted by the Sultanate of Oman in 2027. It is co-organised by Nama Power and Water Procurement and the World Wind Energy Association, with support from the Ministry of Energy and Minerals. Exact dates and venue are expected to be announced later.

Does Oman have wind farms?

Yes. The Dhofar Wind Power Plant is operating in southern Oman, and OQ’s Riyah wind projects (234 MW, 36 turbines) are under development. A 9.6 MW turbine has also been installed in Duqm. More utility-scale wind is planned in Dhofar and Al Wusta.

How much renewable energy does Oman produce?

Grid-connected renewables supplied 9.46% of Oman’s electricity in 2025, up from 4.26% in 2024. Total renewable generation exceeded 4 million MWh in 2025, according to the Ministry of Energy and Minerals.

What are Oman’s renewable energy targets?

Under Oman Vision 2040, the country aims for about 30% renewables in the power mix by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050. Plans include roughly 5.7 GW of solar, more than 2 GW of wind and 1 GW of storage by the end of the decade.

Conclusion

Hosting WWEC2027 confirms that wind energy in Oman is moving from potential to real projects. It will bring global expertise, investment and partnerships to Dhofar, Al Wusta and beyond. Follow our Oman renewable energy news for updates, or contact AL DHAW to plan your own solar project.
